Dr. Stephen Haskins presents the emerging role of focused cardiac ultrasound as a powerful tool for the anesthesiologist in the perioperative setting. He discusses how point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) changes the way patients should be evaluated, and how medical decisions are made. He highlights ultrasound as a change agent for the future of the physical exam, and explains how technology has the ability to rapidly bridge the education and experience gap in medicine. Dr. Haskins also describes the differences between the transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and the transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), shows the different focused cardiac ultrasound (FoCUS) views, and discusses a literature review on POCUS in perioperative care, including the FATE protocol.
